MIGREC

Migration, Integration and Governance Research Centre

Project Concept

MIGREC is a three-year research project funded by the European Union’s H2020 scheme, which started in October 2019. It aims to build a leading scientific research capacity in Migration studies at the Faculty of Political Science (FPN) of the University of Belgrade, with a view to enhance contribution to migration-related research and policy-making in Serbia and the European Union. The outcome of the project will be the creation of a research centre on Migration, Integration and Governance, under the umbrella of which the first Doctoral Program in Migration Studies at the FPN will be established.

MIGREC will bring life to a joint, well-structured coordination and support approach designed to ensure an effective infusion of state-of-the-art research knowledge in three areas that emerge as specific challenges:

Migrant integration. Building knowledge on the most important debates around migrant

Integration in European societies today, so to inform development, implementation and

Evaluation of integration policies in Serbia.

Migration-development nexus. Building understanding of who benefits most, where, why and how in diaspora-centred development strategies, so to inform the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies at the nexus of migration and development in Serbia.

Migration governance. Building knowledge of the norms and organizational structures at global, supranational, regional and national levels which regulate and shape how states respond to migration, so to inform the development of appropriate governance in Serbia.

Project Results

  • Mapping of existing scientific and research networks and analysis of current and future needs regarding migration research and policies in Serbia, which serves as the theoretical basis for the creation of the research centre.
  • Development of the mission, research strategy action and sustainability plan for the establishment of the Migration, Integration and Governance Research Centre within the Faculty of Political Sciences in the University of Belgrade.
  • Creation of a Doctoral Studies Programme that will be implemented within the Research Centre
  • Capacity-building in migration-related research at FPN in order to deepen knowledge of research, policy and practice in the areas of interest, develop skills in research methods relevant to migration studies; and forge national, regional and international links with researchers and policy stakeholders.
